Hey everyone!
Episode 20 is a small collection of Christmas and Wintertime music from independent artists and bands we've put together for your enjoyment as a small token of our thanks. We appreciate your being with us as we close this first calendar year for The Zen and Peace Show. We're a very small show put on by two guys with no experience and we work hard each progressive episode to get better and better, and we can't thank you enough for sticking with us.

2010 looks to be bigger and brighter and we plan on bringing you even more in the coming year!

For now, enjoy the tunes!

List of songs, in order:

Merry ChristmaHannaKwanzaakuh to All on this Happy Festivus Season. In this episode, we share a few select Christmas memories from our childhoods, as well as discuss our favorite Holiday tunes, tv specials and movies. Reminisce with us over your preferred holiday beverage and hopefully we'll have you too saying, "Fra-gee-lay . . . hmmm, must be Italian!"

We begin, as always, with Good, Bad and Ugly.

Kevin's good: Rifftrax.com
Bad: Christmas Creep The retail practice of putting Christmas out in October . . . or earlier!
Ugly: Worker killed on Black Friday last year at Wal-mart.

Zen's Good: Nobody was killed this year on Black Friday. This article best describes our feelings on the savages who walked on a man last year.
Bad: Picking on Santa just because he's fat. The writer of this story, even if it is tongue in cheek, needs to pick on someone else. Oprah, maybe. Not St. Nick.
Ugly: Walmart charging extra to ship to APO addresses.
Update!Since our recording, Walmart has changed their APO rates, but declined to comment. Hand caught in the cookie jar. Shame on you, Wal-Mart.

Podsafe musid for this episode:

After the break we get right into what our favorite Christmas themed and/or Christmas related tv specials and movies are. We proceed in no particular order, but boil it down to two favorites:

Zen likes:

We also mention our least favorites . . .

Two grown men review a book and movie series written for adolescent girls. What could go wrong? Before you decide not to download this episode (we're talking to the men, here) be aware that listening to a Twilight review will NOT change your sexual orientation. It may, in fact, enlighten you a little when all is said and done. Although, we doubt it.

For Good, Bad and Ugly Kevin ties his picks in with the topic of obsession and how a little can be a good thing, a lot can be a bad thing, and some people have obsessions that are just plain ugly.

Zen's G,B&U deals with a topic very much in the news these days, Tiger Woods. Zen thinks it is good that his life is spiraling out of control in a mix of mistresses and drugs, because it confirms that Zen does indeed have the power to curse celebrities who talk smack about Hockey. For his bad, Zen picks news headlines that proclaim Tiger's wife, Elin, is somehow in some national crisis-level nightmare compared to the millions of other women around the country dealing with the same problem.

Finally, for his Ugly, Zen goes off topic completely to pay tribute to, and say farewell to, one of the greatest movie review podcasts ever to grace the Interwebs: Scene Unseen. We at the Zen and Peace Show wish Chris and Jimmy nothing but success as they pursue work inside the film industry.

Before the break, Zen challenges Kevin to this quiz based on the Judy Blume book "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret." The reason for this is explained in the podcast. The premise for this game quickly falls apart and, thankfully, the quiz is abandoned only a few questions in.

Music for this episode cleared by and provided by the good folks at Mevio.com and found at MusicAlley.com.

Intro song: Hey Little Goth Girl by Roadside Attraction.

Break song: The Astronauts - The Astronauts - EP - Vampire Strippers Vampire Strippers by The Astronauts

Outro song: A Whiter Shade of Pale (Live) by Procol Harum

After the break, we begin our review of the Twilight series of books and movies, concentrating mainly on the first movie, "Twilight." We won't divulge our decision here on the blogpage. To find out what we really thought about the film, you'll just have to listen to the podcast.

Media Picks for this episode:

Kevin picks: Salem's Lot by Stephen King.

Zen picks: Let The Right One In

Celebrate Halloween with Zen and Peace as we present a show that is guaranteed to inform as well as delight. Listen to this episode and we promise that you will stand ready and equipped with the knowledge and the skills necessary to face down the waves of shuffling, mumbling zombie hordes that will be beating down your door when the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse comes to pass.

Before we get to the instructional portion of the episode, however, we do our customary Good, Bad and Ugly segment . . . Zombie Edition!
For his good, Kevin picks Rob Zombie, a horrorific director, musician and artist. For his bad, he picks movies with fast-moving zombies that we argue don't qualify as real zombies in the classic sense of the word. For his ugly, Kevin chooses the movie Zombie Strippers, a good idea that was poorly executed.
Zen picks for his good the phenomena known as Zombie Walks. We're intrigued by the idea of a parade of zombies lurching down a city street whether it be for charity of just for the hell of it. For his bad, Zen picks ACTUAL HUMAN BRAIN EATING AMOEBA that he is convinced is the origin of the coming Zombie Apocalypse. It's not hard to see that a creature that wants to actually consume human brains could someday mutate into something akin to a zombie. Finally, for his ugly, Zen chooses listener and friend of the show Dwayne from Flagstaff for his spoiling of the movie Zombieland and specifically the awesome cameo that appears in the film. Not wishing to perpetuate the spoilage, we went back and beeped out Zen's repeating of the actor's name. If you haven't seen the film yet, you're welcome.

Prior to the intermission, we rundown the 31 Best-Worst Halloween Costumes. If you click the link, don't say we didn't warn you that some of these costumes are truly offensive . . . in other words, truly hilarious. If you want to see an example of a truly awesome costume, check out this fully transformable Bumblebee costume:

In Part two of our Zombie slaughtering spectacular, we begin by running down the top 5 people we would want to use to assemble our ideal Zombie survival Team. Independently and without consulting the other, we each came up with a list of our personal top 5. When our lists were compared, we found out that although we picked different individuals, both lists were eerily similiar in that they both consisted of the same 5 "types" of people. Apparently, in a Zombie Apocalypse, you'll need:

  • The All Around Guy
  • The Weapons Expert
  • The Fabricator
  • The Zombie-Bait
  • The Hot Chick
Here's who we chose:

Call 203-ZEN-PEAC and let us know who your top 5 would be.

After discussing where the ideal hideout spot would be, the show goes extremely dark when we, regrettably, discuss sex with zombies. We examine in what rare and desperate situation you would even want to try and how you would go about doing it. Then we pick which female zombie we would even attempt this with. We do agree that you would have to get to her quick, just after being bit, before the zombification process really takes hold and the decay makes it completely impossible. We very sincerely apologize for taking the episode there.

Media Picks for this episode:

Zen picks: Shaun of the Dead

Kevin picks: Zombieland

"When I grow up, I want to be . . ."
If you're like 99% of us, what followed those words when you were a kid and what you actually do for a living now are probably two completely different things. None of us knew what sad and mediocre career paths we would follow in our long trip to the middle. Here we are in the present, slaving away at jobs that sap of us of our will to live, longingly recalling simpler times when we flipped burgers for minimum wage and yet found some sort of happiness in the carefree days of our youth. Or maybe it's been so long since our first jobs that we've forgotten just how fucked up they were.

Well, let's bring back those days. Let's talk about the good, bad and ugly aspects of our first jobs. Maybe when our discussion today is through, we'll be a little more thankful for our current careers. Maybe.

In our Good, Bad and Ugly segment we promised to link to this Fake, Bot-Generated Twitter account that is following me. Obviously these tweets are plucked from random articles. Since we recorded the show I picked up two new "followers" with different names and pics but posting the exact same tweets. Duh. Check them out HERE and HERE.

Music for this episode provided by the Podshow Podsafe Music Network at Music Alley, and The Independent Online Distribution Alliance.

As we discuss our first jobs, I admit to having a Job in the Box starting at the tender age of 16. Here is Google's street view of the actual, exact location I worked at:

Move across the street on the map and you'll see the 7-11 I worked at also.

I proceed to divulge some Secrets in the Box as we continue our show. Listen in if you want to know why, when you pulled up to the drive thru window, the person working the window asked his co-worker for a "Price Check".
Some of the place we have worked include: delivering newspapers for both the Arizona Daily Sun (Flagstaff) and the Arizona Daily Star (Tucson), different security companies, several movie theaters, state prisons and worst of all, the Big W. To understand why the Big W is the worst of them all, browse on over to this website: Click he-ah.
We conclude the work-talk with a tawdry tale of coworker misdeeds. Which behavior is worse? Spearing an innocent young lass in a second-rate internet photo shoot? Finding said photo-set and emailing it to friends? Or printing out said photos and taking them to your shared workspace? In the end, it must be agreed that we are all have dirty hands and dirtier hearts. The moral: if you find naughty pictures of someone you work with on the internet, just take a moment to appreciate them and then click and move on.

Hey Everyone! Welcome to the first episode in our Versus series. Two pop culture icons face off in a battle to the death! This episode, it's Sylvester Stallone versus Arnold Schwarzenegger to determine the greatest action movie star of all time.

Before they face off, however, we shake down this week's Good, Bad, and Ugly.
(click on Good, Bad or Ugly for links to Zen's picks)
Kevin spotlights Arnie catchphrases that run the entire spectrum from Good to Ugly.

After G,B&U we play a quick game in which Kevin must try and match Movie Character Names to either actor and identify the film they are in.

In Segment 2 of the show, we examine the history and career of one Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone. In Segment 3, the same spotlight is turned on to the filmography of The Governator, Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger.
When the dust clears from this epic duel, Kevin crowns a winner and Zen does also. You'll have to listen to the whole show to find out who we pick as the greatest Action Hero of Moviedom.

It's been such a long time . . . but we're back!
We return in Episode 14 with tales from The Magic Kindgom . . . or make that The Tragic Kingdom, as we recount recent events in which 3 Disneyworld employees died within a 7 week span in our Good, Bad and Ugly segment.

After G,B&U we move on to a quick trivia game where Kevin continues to impress all with his knowledge, missing only one question. And no, he didn't miss the question "What is the best ride in Disneyland to masturbate unnoticed?" to which he responded "The Haunted Mansion." Technically correct, we also would have accepted as a right answer "Dumbo the Flying Elephant" as long as you maintained a higher flight pattern than the other riders around you.

Music this episode provided by IODA at IODA PROMONET.com

Part Two of our episode focuses on the different rides and attractions Disneyland California has to offer. We list the rides of the "Must Do" list as well as some that make the "Must Don't" list. Highlights include Kevin's tip that making eye contact with the magic goat of Big Thunder will make you feel groovy, as well as the both of us admitting to total emasculation at the hands of our wives on the ride "Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters."

Ladies and Gentlemen! Boys and Girls of All Ages*! Step right up and be prepared to be thrilled and amazed as we take you on a magical journey through all that is great and, at the same time, not so great at your local carnival. From the gooey deliciousness that is the Deep-Fried Twinkie to the towering, clanking deathtrap that is known simply as The Zipper, we take you from the parking lot, through the ticket booths, past the livestock and midway games and straight into the heart of all that is American.

We begin the discussion of our topic by talking about rides. Let's face it. For 99% of us (the other 1% being Kevin Peace), the rides are our whole reason for going to the Fair.

We rate the Best and Worst rides, and re-live the horror of puking after an all too dizzying trip on some of the more wretched machines.

Next, we move on to the more appetizing subject of Fair Food. There's not much to hate, and quite a lot to love . . . we both get very hungry just talking about it. If our discussion has you longing for some sweet treats also, head on over Here and Here for some quick recipes to make your own carnival food at home.

Lastly we examine the ego-sapping, dollar-draining moneypits of humiliation known as the Midway Games. Rather than let our beloved listeners continue to twist in the wind at the hands of these evil, money-grubbing Carnies, we equip them with the knowledge necessary to take these bad guys down and take home that supersweet Bart Simpson poster.

Media picks for this episode:

Kevin picks: Twilight Eyes by Dean Koontz

Zen picks: Carny: Americana on the Midway by Virginia Lee Hunter. Also the documentary based on the book:

If that is not enough, Zen also recommends checking out the book, "Memoirs of a Sword-Swallower" by Daniel Mannix.

In what is sure to be our most downloaded episode ever, or at least this week, Zen and Kevin tackle the topic of Concerts. From tiny bar shows to capacity crowd arena-busters, the guys talk about their favorite shows as well as some they didn't have such a good time at. They examine what makes for a great concert experience and what can be at times a "show-killer."

Highlights from the Good, Bad and Ugly segment include:

Warrant performing drunk in Vegas

Peter Cetera chokes on stage (literally)

After Good, Bad and Ugly Zen challenges Kevin to a game of "Kiss This Guy." No, Kevin isn't coming out of the closet. The game is based on the website KissThisGuy.com and consists of guessing the correct song lyrics that correspond to popular, oft-misheard lyrics. The title is taken from the Jimi Hendrix song "Purple Haze", in which many people mistakenly hear Jimi sing "'Scuse me, while I kiss this guy" when the correct lyrics actually say, " . . . while I kiss the sky."

Music for this episode provided by the Podsafe Music Network at music.podshow.com and IODA Promo Net.

In the second half of the show, the guys get right into the topic of Concerts . . . what they love and what they hate. After beating the topic to death and beyond, they quickly move on to an abbreviated 3 song game and Kevin quizzes Zen on how well he knows his co-host by asking him which show out of a series of concerts would be one he did not attend.

Zen and Kevin dig deep into the closet, dust off the old consoles and fire 'em up. As the familiar electro-primitive songs start playing, they invite you to take a trip down 8 Bit Memory Lane.

The show starts off, unfortunately, with some corrections and retractions. Our email inbox was overflowing with people calling us on the carpet for our mistakes and misstatements. Well, two people.

Tom Keck pointed out that we were incorrect in Episode 9 when we proclaimed Inglorious Basterds to be completely original, citing this old italian flick. Oh well.

We were further humbled when the director of Star Wait himself, Michael Rotman, emailed us and politely pointed out that we were wrong to say that his website, StarWait.com, was down. The site is up and running, so please go check it out. You can buy the DVD brand new, straight from him, on the site.

Our Good, Bad and Ugly segment follows, where we bemoan the demise of the Video Game Arcade. Kevin attempts to put Infocom in his Bad for going out of business and thus keeping him from ever playing Zork again, but Zen alerts him to This Web Site that allow you to play Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide and a plethora of other classic Text games online for free. We marvel at the ignorance of a British Mom who wonders why One Nintendo DS divided by Four unruly children equals mayhem. She blames "computer games." We blame her poor arithmetic. Finally, we talk about the upcoming release of Fat Princess.
With all the hubbub surrounding the controversial release, Zen conducts the first ZAP show interview with the Manager of VGE (Video Game Emporium), located in the Flagstaff Mall.

The first half of the show concludes with a quiz, of course. Zen plays clips and segments of classic video game music and sound effects and then challenges Kevin to identify the source. Play along at home, you're sure to score better than Kevin did.

The Songs played during this episode are:

In the second half of the show, we get straight to the topic of classic video games. Zen is so stoked to be talking about the subject, he wore his lucky Mario "Know Your Mushrooms" T-shirt. The guys talk about Pong, the Atari 2600, the NES and Commodore 64. They wax nostalgic for all kinds of games, from Zork and Zelda to Where In The World is Carmen SanDiego.

It's hard to believe, when you look at today's controllers with their myriad buttons and sticks, that we ever played with anything so simple as the original Atari joystick. Our palms ache just remembering it. If you would like your palms to hurt also, Click Here to buy a USB replica to use on your PC games. You masochist.

We pull out a couple of other names from the contest hat, and to thank them for taking our gaming survey, they can pick any prize from the Zen and Peace Show Prize Box. Congratulations to Tom Keck and to the anonymous survey-taker named awsummdude. Be sure to email us with your choice, guys!

Episode 9, our 2009 summer movie preview show, features the triumphant return of Kevin Peace to the podcast. Kevin's been on vacation the last few weeks, so his Good, Bad and Ugly highlights his experiences at Disneyland and at various movie theaters and ballparks in Southern California. Zen's G,B&U are as follows:

We love movies and we happily rundown all the big summer movies, giving a thumbs up to most of the flicks coming to theaters in the next few months. Keep in mind, however, that the slogan of the Zen and Peace show - "Opinionated Experts on Nothing" should be taken literally. We are not professional movie reviewers and speak only from our own particular movie tastes. For more seasoned movie reviews, we'd like to direct you to two of our favorite podcasts:

The Zen and Peace Show would like to give a big Thank You to Engine Room Recordings for providing the music for this episode. We're proudly featuring Porter Block, a great New York band with a radio-friendly sound. Summer movies should be about having fun and escaping, and we think summer music should also be fun and something you can blast from your car while cruising to the beach. For the break, we present the song Wonder About Me and close out the show with their song Something Better.

It seems like everyone is down in the dumps about the economy. . .
but Zen and Kevin are here to cheer you up with money saving tips and freebies that will have you walking on the sunny side of the street! It's all about the economy, so Good, Bad and Ugly are all stories of businesses and companies making the news lately. Highlight topics are the arrest of ShamWow pitchman Vince Shlomi, tips to help your budget (some good, some bad), and the resurgence of eBay.

The episode is book-ended by the song "Jim in a Bottle" by Charlie Walker. The break song is "Feel.Love.Thinking.Of" by Faunts, a terrific electronic pop band from Edmonton. Both songs are available to download for free via the following link, however, if you would like to support the artists who make their music available on the Independent Online Distribution Alliance, please buy the tracks from iTunes.

(to download either song as an mp3, click on the song title)

Also on the show, we update the listeners on the Favorite Japanese Baseball team of the ZAP show:
The Hanshin Tigers! Congratulations to the Tigers, who beat the Swallows in their opener. Do you remember our story 2 episodes ago in which we hoped the curse of Colonel Sanders would be lifted off of the Tigers? Here is a picture comparing Colonel Sanders to Randy Bass.

Media picks for the week:

Kevin picks The Dave Ramsey Show
Zen picks The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

Lastly, we'd like to announce our eBay winner for this week. Our first ever winner is Tom Keck! If you would like to win something from our eBay prize box, just participate in the ZAP community.
